Fire Station Evacuated After Sliding Snow, Ice Breaks Gas Meter

A perfectly placed pile of snow and ice slid off the roof of a Weston Fire Station Tuesday night, crashing onto a gas meter and causing a gas leak. Weston Fire Station #2 at 390 South Ave., was evacuated at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after firefighters inside heard the rumble of sliding snow and ice, the crash of it falling from the roof and then the obvious sounds of leaking gas. Fire Capt. Stephen Carter said no one was injured and the gas company responded quickly to the situation. In all, firefighters were evacuated from the firehouse for about an hour, Carter estimated, and the gas company remained on the scene conducting repairs as of 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. UPDATE: Two People Transported Following Head-On Collision

A three-car accident had two people trapped.

[Update, 4:40 p.m.] At 1:23 Friday afternoon, Weston Police Officer Daniel Costa came across a three-car collision during his patrol. The collision, at Route 30 and Oak Street, had two individuals trapped in a vehicle, according to Weston Police Lt. John Lyons. Lyons said the Weston Fire Department responded and extracted the individuals from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life. A Wayland Advanced Life Support (ALS) unit also responded and the individuals were transported to the hospital. The accident remains under investigation. This edition of You Ask, Patch Answers looks at the open burning season.

The Massachusetts open burning season begins Jan. 15 and continues until May 1, and the Weston Fire Department is currently issuing permits. There is no cost to obtain an open burning permit, but residents must obtain one annually in order to legally burn. Residents should print the permit application (available as a PDF with this article), complete it and bring it to the Weston Fire Department. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection regulates open burning and it is enforced by local fire departments. Burning is regulated through a two-step process that involves residents applying for and obtaining a permit annually and then applying for approval to burn each day they wish to exercise the permit. The Weston Fire Department escorted a very special guest through town Wednesday ... and they'll be out again tonight.

Santa Claus came to Weston a little bit early ... and the Weston Fire Department had the honor of escorting him throughout town. On Wednesday night, the Weston Fire Department began its annual trek through town with Santa Claus, stopping at various spot to greet groups of excited children and hand out candy canes. Patch caught up with Santa at Fairview and Montvale roads, where Santa spent time hearing Christmas wishes and even reading a Christmas letter or two. Weston Fire Issues Heating Safety Tips

It may be unseasonably warm now, but it is New England after all. Colder days are inevitable.

The following reminders were provided by the Weston Fire Department. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), half of all home-heating fires occur during the winter months. On average, NFPA research shows that heating equipment is involved in more than 60,000 reported U.S. home structure fires per year, with associated loss of more than 550 civilian deaths, more than 1,600 civilian injuries and roughly $900 million in direct property damage. “While these numbers are frightening, nearly all of these fires are preventable,” said Chief Soar of the Weston Fire Department. “We can reduce the number of home heating fires in our community by taking some simple precautions and using heating equipment properly.” SAFETY TIPS …

Gas Line Break Under Control, Did Not Pose Signficant Danger

A landscaper broke the line while working at a home on Newton Street.

This morning's natural gas line break at 201 Newton St., did not lead to any evacuations in the area and was quickly under control, according to the Weston Fire Department. Fire Chief David Soar said it appeared that a landscaper digging up a tree struck the gas line around 11:30 a.m. Monday. Soar said the landscaper notified the gas company, and a neighbor smelled gas and phoned the Weston Fire Department. The Weston Police Department provided traffic support for Newton Street, which remained open as gas company employees worked to shut off the curbside gas valve feeding the broken line. Fire Capt.
