I don't support Article 14 - Case Corner Roundabout Plan. Until ALL Weston students are receiving an appropriate and meaningful education it is beyond ludicrous to be even talking about spending additional funds to beautify a campus or change a traffic pattern that is working sufficiently. Money MUST be better spent educating students who are most in need of an education and whose education has …   more ›

Weston High Fails to Make Newsweek's Top-Rated Schools List

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek has ranked the high schools nationally, but the criteria it used leaves Weston High School off of the list. This, in spite of Weston High's No. 1 ranking in Boston Magazine's 2012 list of the top 20 high schools in Boston and the Boston suburbs. Weston High School also failed to rank in US News' top 500 high schools nationally. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about the ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time …

People moving into the town care, unfortunately over time it effects real estate values. Seems silly and stupid, but everyone lives and dies by this rankings as it is all about managing fears and expectations of putting your money down only on "the best". How you do that is with data. If this is their only data points, it makes a difference.   more ›

Police Presence Ramped Up for Wayland Vs. Weston Basketball Game

In a response to an "unruly" crowd at a Wayland vs. Weston hockey game last week, Wayland Student Press Network reports that more police than usual were on hand for Friday's Wayland vs. Weston basketball game.

A Jan. 30 hockey game between Weston and Wayland turned unruly when fans clashed outside the Rivers School rink where the game was held. Weston police officers responded to the school and dispersed the crowd, but the event has had some apparently lasting consequences for student spectators. On Friday, Weston High School Principal Anthony Parker read an announcement to students over the school's public address system that called the behavior at Wednesday's hockey game "appalling." "Our once healthy and innocent competition with Wayland has turned ugly!," Parker's announcement said. It was released via the town's listserv in addition to being read over the PA. "Fueled in part by Facebook, we have crossed the line separating appropriate and …

Just this morning I saw VB on FOX TV deploring the constant fighting at pro hockey games. These overpaid hooligans set a very bad example for our student athletes and ruin the enjoyment of the game. Can't something be done about this? In the meantime, while I applaud Principal Anthony Parker's pro-active response, I do hope that all goes back to normal soon. Friendly aggression is part of any …   more ›

Weston, Wayland Swim Meet Showcases Firsts, Raises Funds for Newtown

The annual rivalry swim meet brought out some athletic prowess and some generous hearts as well.

The annual Weston vs. Wayland swim meet was held on Dec. 21 at the Wayland Community Pool and showcased a number of firsts in this long time rivalry. The two teams are bigger than they have ever been before with almost 200 swimmers and divers on the combined teams. For the first time ever the squads were split and a junior varsity meet was held before the varsity meet. The JV meet gave many swimmers a chance to swim events they had never tried before, particularly in the 500 free and 100 butterfly. The intensity of the rivalry was displayed in the varsity meet with Weston taking the boys competition by a score of 94-87 and Wayland taking the girls meet with a score of 95-86. A number of new pool records were set demonstrating the high …

Weston Above State Average in Graduation Rates

But how does Weston's graduation rate compare to other communities nearby?

Massachusetts didn't make the top 10 high school graduation rates in the nation, according to preliminary data released by the U.S. Department of Education on Monday, but Weston High School did have a higher graduation rate than the state average. According to the preliminary state-reported data, for the 2010-2011 school year Massachusetts had a four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate of 83 percent, which ties for 11th highest in the nation with six other states. Iowa had the highest rate at 88 percent. (See the PDF attached to this article for full results.)
