Top Weston Patch Sports Stories for 2011

It was another big year for Weston sports, with several teams winning state or division championships and many others showing strong finishes. Here's a look (in no particular order) of some of the year's highlights.

1. Girls' swim team blasts through varsity record, Feb. 11 After a fabulous finish to the regular season, the Weston Girls' and Boys' Swimming and Diving programs had a strong start to the championship season with a varsity record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. 2. Pohl, Brackett the big winners as Weston takes a strong eighth place at Division 4 Girls' Track and Field Championships, Feb. 22 The Weston girls' track team sparkled with an eighth place finish out of 39 teams at the Division 4 State Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center, with sophomore Abigail Pohl and junior Olivia Brackett the big winners for the Wildcats, crossing first and second, respectively, in the one-mile run. 3. Weston Swim and Dive Program Begins 40th Season at DCL Relay Carnival

Tide opens dual meet season tomorrow against rival Waltham.

Submitted by the Weston Athletic Department: The Weston High School Swimming and Diving program began its fortieth season last Friday afternoon at the annual DCL Relay Carnival at Atkinson Pool in Sudbury, with the Red Tide taking top honors in eight of 14 events. Leading the way for the GLOWS were senior Bianca Tocci and freshman Julimar Avila, each with three golds in three swims. The pair teamed with junior Katie Kim and sophomore Victoria Bryson to take the 200 free relay, and combined with Kim and senior Laura Beaudry in taking the 400 free relay. Tocci also joined classmates Stephanie Palocz and Julia Meehan to take the 200 butterfly relay while Avila was part of a winning individual medley relay that included sophomore Anna Neufeld …

Weston Linebacker Igwe-Kalu Featured in Weekly Athlete Profile

Senior called "strong, fast and physical" by coach.

Weston linebacker Igwe Igwe-Kalu has been featured in a MetroWest Subaru High School Sports weekly profile. Despite a “tough” season that ended with an overall record of 1-10 and a Thanksgiving Day loss to Wayland, the Weston football team had a strong leader in Igwe-Kalu, according to head coach Sean McHugh. “As a leader, Igwe has been great … he’s probably our best leader,” said McHugh in the MetroWest Subaru clip. “It’s been a hard season and we’ve lost a lot of football games. I think the kids look to him when times are tough.” In the clip, Igwe-Kalu credits his success to his Nigerian parents, whom he said “tried their hardest to succeed. Weston Girls Cross Country Finishes Strong Season

Team comes within one point of qualifying for Nationals.

The Weston Girls ran their final meet of the season last Saturday, finishing third in the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, New York, which included runners from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Weston finished ahead of the Massachusetts Division One champions Whitman-Hanson, Massachusetts Division Two champions Bishop-Feehan, Rhode Island champions La Salle, Connecticut champions Guilford and many other top teams from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. PHOTOS: Weston Girls Soccer Team Takes On Alumna Squad

Varsity girls team ekes out victory over former players at Thanksgiving break scrimmage.

The day after Thanksgiving was a perfect one for a scrimmage of current and former girls soccer players that had been in the works for weeks. Coach James Blackwell wanted to get the girls together for a friendly game, especially those who participated in last year's successful MA Division Three State Championship. Players from previous years' WHS Girls Soccer Varsity Team who challenged this year's squad included: Laura Creamer '08, Katie Graves '10, Sivana Barron '11, Nicole Brenner '11, Perri Chilton '11, Anna Duffey '11, Robyn Manley '11, Lindsay McCabe '11 and Dana White '11. The varsity team won the match with a final score of 3-2.

It's time for the Sports Watch, the fastest three minutes in Weston Sports coming your way right now: Well, two of the best girls soccer teams in the Dual County League squared off in a real doozy last week at Proctor field, and defending state title champion Weston was true to form in its awe-inspiring 2-0 victory over visiting Concord-Carlisle. Both teams improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the DCL Small Division. Weston's play was so crisp it showed its deep strength all over the field. Never was that more evident than when junior star defender Sarah Peters dashed toward her own goal-line, knocking the ball away just as it was about to cross at the 23:30 mark of the second half. Two of the best girls soccer teams in the Dual County League squared off in a real doozy yesterday at Proctor field, and defending state title champion Weston was true to form in its awe-inspiring 2-0 victory over visiting Concord-Carlisle. Both teams are now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the DCL Small Division. Weston's play was so crisp it showed its deep strength all over the field. Never was that more evident than when junior star defender Sarah Peters dashed toward her own goal-line, knocking the ball away just as it was about to cross at the 23:30 mark of the second half. Boys Soccer Edged Out by Wayland

Nico Pascual-Leone had a hat-trick as the Wayland boys soccer team edged Weston, 4-3, in a battle of Dual County League teams last night. Pascual-Leone scored his three goals in the first half, while his younger brother Andres Pascual-Leone notched the game winner to send the Warriors to a perfect 2-0 in the DCL and 3-3 overall. Weston dropped to 2-4 with the loss. “Whenever we play Weston it’s a battle,” Wayland coach Dave Gavron said. “They are a hard working team that makes us maintain our focus for as much as possible.” Weston broke a 1-1 tie with a a goal by senior captain Kyle Kachadurian. With yesterday's stunning 3-0 win over visiting Concord-Carlisle, the undefeated Wildcats improved to 4-0-2. "I thought we played well, we had a great passing game," Weston head coach Laura Galopim said. "It was just flowing." The Patriots, meanwhile, fell to 2-3 during a campaign in which they already were hampered by injuries in the preseason.
