The Conservation Commission met with Weston Selectmen Wednesday night to talk about the town's 2012 Deer Management Program as well as its future.
It takes a high-tension topic for the phrases "deer slobber" and "bloody slaughter" to come up under the same agenda item at a Weston Board of Selectmen meeting. But the town's 2012 Deer Management Program, which allowed bow hunting on five of Weston's conservation lands, is just such a topic. Wednesday night, nearly every seat was filled in the first floor conference room at Weston Town Hall by the time Weston Conservation Administrator Michele Grzenda began her presentation. Grzenda began by explaining the origins of the program, which involved a "handful of letters" selectmen and members of the Conservation Commission received between 2008 and 2010 that expressed concerns about "the burgeoning deer population and its effect on plants, …

The Conservation Commission and Board of Selectmen will review the 2012 Deer Program tonight and discuss plans for 2013. The 2012 deer management program report is available online.
Bow hunters had access to five conservation areas in Weston during last fall's hunting season as part of a deer management program agreed to by the Conservation Commission and Board of Selectmen. According to the 2012 Deer Management Program Summary, the program was implemented after residents wrote letters in recent years urging the Conservation Commission and selectmen to "look into the problem of too many deer." The program summary (PDF here) posted on the Town of Weston website outlines the steps pursued leading up to the implementation of the program as well as major efforts both for and against it. According to the report, a total of 18 deer, 10 does and eight bucks, were harvested between Oct. 15, 2012 and Dec. 31, 2012, from …

TO THE EDITOR: Weston’s election season starts March 11, with the town caucus at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall. I will be running for selectman. I believe my business background and my past service on the Finance Committee make me qualified to serve in that office. I also hope my campaign encourages more public discussion and debate about current issues facing voters and taxpayers, particularly about our town government’s high and growing levels of spending and debt. I will offer clear positions during my campaign. These positions are not beyond improvement, but I believe they are worth consideration, discussion and debate. And beyond any doubt these positions have to be submitted for voter approval before any action is taken. First, I am opposed…

Business as usual at this week's Board of Selectmen meeting? Not exactly.
Following a period of controversy likened by one selectman to a “witch hunt,” the Weston Board of Selectmen voted last night 2-1 to accept the westonGrapevine online communication service as a gift from Jonathan Spector, husband of town moderator Wendy Spector. A new plan by the selectmen to solicit citizen participation via a “resident comment” agenda item led off the meeting, and was immediately followed by the westonGrapevine item, leading to a lengthy discussion in a filled room at Town Hall, in which some tensions arose. According to Town Manager Donna VanderClock, a service like westonGrapevine was first conceptualized some years ago by town officials who “wanted people to get information.” Shortly following the 2009 Town Meeting …

Board, residents weigh pros and cons of controversial proposed roundabout.
The ongoing discussion about whether to build a roundabout at Case's Corner reached the next stage at the Monday, Feb. 27 Board of Selectmen meeting, where abutters and other residents gathered to hear further information, and weigh in on the controversial proposal. Some 30 attendees packed the lower level conference room at Weston Town Hall, and mainly expressed discontent at the proposal, saying the high-traffic time at the intersection is mainly limited to morning commuting hours and doesn’t merit the expense of a roundabout, among other objections. As part of a presentation to the board by the Traffic and Sidewalk Committee (TSC), which has spearheaded efforts to build the roundabout at the intersection of Wellesley and Newton streets…

I did not call all animal rights activists terrorists I just stated that some are in this country. I am sure that you are not one. Just because a person is standing in the woods with hunting gear on does not mean they are hunting. A hunter can walk along a road or next to a house as long as he does not discharge a weapon. This hunter could have had permission from the landowner who posted it. The…   more ›
