Teacher Appreciation Week: What to Give in Weston?

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10. Weston Public Schools has specific instructions on appropriate teacher gifts.

Teacher Appreciation Week is this week, May 6-10, so take a moment and show your children's teachers how much they mean to you ... but please follow the rules. Weston Public Schools generally discourages personal gifts to teachers, but does have a policy in place for gift-giving that draws from the state Conflict of Interest Law. Before you head out and purchase that extravagant "Thank you" gift, take a look at the guidelines. In general, per year: - Think in terms of a $50 maximum. Teachers cannot accept a single gift or several small gifts that value more than $50 from a single individual or family. - Group gifts. A classroom can come together to give a gift up to $150 in value; however, that $50 cap still applies to each family. …

My mother always most appreciated the things the children made for her themselves, often with a little help from their parents. She's been gone many years but we still have the wood plaque engraved with the message "To My Favorite Teacher, Mrs. Podgorski" from "Derick" a 4th grader of long ago in wonderful Woonsocket, Rhode Island, where money may be scarce but genuinely good people are …   more ›

What is the Dog Registration Process in Weston?

It's that time of year ... time to make sure Fido (or Fifi) is fully licensed in Weston.

By the end of the month, you're going to need to have your canine companion up-to-date on shots and fully registered in the Town of Weston. Weston requires that all dogs be registered by April 30 of each year; the registration period covers Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 of each year. The process itself is fairly simple: 1. Make sure your dog is current on its rabies vaccination. 2. File proof of vaccination with the Weston town clerk's office. This can be done in person at Weston Town Hall or by mailing a copy to: Town Clerk's Office, Town Hall, P.O. Box 378, Weston, MA 02493. 3. Complete the registration online (you'll still need to file a rabies form with the clerk) or by filling out the form (print it here) and bringing or sending it to the town …

How Did Weston's Snow Budget Fare This Winter?

A snowy winter created a lot of work for Weston's DPW -- it also left a dent in the pocketbook.

Punxsutawney Phil was wrong. Winter definitely decided to linger this year. But it didn't just take a toll on drivers' patience, it hit Weston's pocketbook as well. Weston Department of Public Works Director of Operations Bob Hoffman said Weston went right through the $253,000 allocated to the Fiscal Year 2013 snow budget. In fact, Hoffman said, the department is probably over that amount by $270,000, which would bring the total snow expenditures to $523,000 for the fiscal year. The extra cash was allocated from the town's free cash reserves. Still, Hoffman said, that's nothing compared to the winter of 2010-2011, when Weston spent almost $800,000 on removal and cleanup of the 84 inches of snow that fell that season. This winter, Hoffman …

When is The Last Day of School for Weston Students?

A hurricane, a blizzard and just your run-of-the-mill nor'easters have caused a Weston Public Schools snow day situation.

Perhaps the "snow days" that were actually "hurricane days" back in October should have been considered a warning: Weston Public Schools were in for a rough year of cancel-classes, make-them-up-in-June. With the latest school closing on March 19, the fifth of the school year, Weston Public Schools are now scheduled to remain in session until Friday, June 28. And, while it's still early, the WHDH forecast for next Tuesday, March 25, currently calls for "snow, rain & wind." Could there be another snow day in Weston's future? We shall see ...

When Will the Days Begin to Get Longer?

You ask, Patch answers. When can we expect longer days?

Winter can be tough on the emotions. The cold weather can be difficult to deal with, snow can be a pain (though also fun) but what really seems to get people down is the short days. There is something about the sun going down before most people get out of work that is depressing. So when can we expect longer days? The days will begin to get longer after the Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day of the year. According to timeanddate.com the December solstice occurs when the sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees is normally on Dec. 21, but the actual shortest day can be between Dec. 20 and 23 depending on the year. According to sunrisesunset.com, the shortest day of the year in this area will be on Dec. 22. On that…
