Teacher Appreciation Week: What to Give in Weston?

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6-10. Weston Public Schools has specific instructions on appropriate teacher gifts.

Teacher Appreciation Week is this week, May 6-10, so take a moment and show your children's teachers how much they mean to you ... but please follow the rules. Weston Public Schools generally discourages personal gifts to teachers, but does have a policy in place for gift-giving that draws from the state Conflict of Interest Law. Before you head out and purchase that extravagant "Thank you" gift, take a look at the guidelines. In general, per year: - Think in terms of a $50 maximum. Teachers cannot accept a single gift or several small gifts that value more than $50 from a single individual or family. - Group gifts. A classroom can come together to give a gift up to $150 in value; however, that $50 cap still applies to each family. …

My mother always most appreciated the things the children made for her themselves, often with a little help from their parents. She's been gone many years but we still have the wood plaque engraved with the message "To My Favorite Teacher, Mrs. Podgorski" from "Derick" a 4th grader of long ago in wonderful Woonsocket, Rhode Island, where money may be scarce but genuinely good people are …   more ›

Weston Schools Ready for Students' Questions

Students will return to Weston's classrooms Monday after a week that shook the very foundations of Boston and beyond.

Weston Superintendent Cheryl Maloney acknowledged that the 2012-13 school year has been one full of challenges and far too much tragedy. As students, teachers and administrators return to Weston's schools after April vacation, they bring with them various degrees of understanding, experiences, questions and insights related to the Boston Marathon bombings and their aftermath. Maloney said she is certain that the system's faculty and administrators will be ready to respond whatever questions may arise. “We know we’ll probably follow in some ways the same approach we did to the previous violent tragedy in Newtown,” Maloney told Patch Sunday afternoon. "All of the administrators will be meeting here in my office at 6 p.m. We’ll be moving …

Weston Sees Some Closures and Cancellations Due to Manhunt

Weston isn't in the official "shelter in place" area, but several schools are taking precautions and canceling activities anyway.

Weston, along with the rest of the Boston area, woke up Friday morning to nothing short of surreal news: Their hometown -- where their Red Sox and Bruins play -- was in a state of high tension as law enforcement searched for a 19-year-old man suspected of working with his older brother to carry out the Boston Marathon bombings. Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, of Cambridge, was suspected of being on the run in Watertown, prompting the governor and police to shut down access to and from the city and issue "shelter in place" advisories for residents of Cambridge, Newton, Belmont, Watertown and later Boston and Brookline. Tarsnaev's brother and alleged accomplice in the bombings, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was killed during a shootout in Watertown …

Weston Superintendent Addresses Boston Marathon Bombings

Weston Public Schools Superintendent Cheryl Maloney provides some thoughts on the Boston Marathon bombings and offers some resources for parents helping their children cope with and understand the tragedy.

The message below was issued by Superintendent Cheryl Maloney. We have all been upset by the bombings that occurred near the finish line of the April 15th Boston Marathon. Weston was represented amongst the runners, spectators and volunteers. However, to the best of our knowledge, none were injured. Other communities were not as fortunate. If you are looking for some help in having a conversation with your children or answering their questions about this violence, here is a source sent to us by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health: Talking with Kids about Tragedy All of us at the Children's League of Massachusetts send our thoughts, prayers and heart-filled condolences to the families, victims and survivors of the tragedy that …

School Committee Tentatively Supports Modifications of 2013-14 Calendar

A final vote on the proposed changes is schedule for the April 28 School Committee meeting.

Weather-related cancellations have pushed Weston's last day of school this school year to Friday, June 28. In light of such a late closing this year, Superintendent Cheryl Maloney wanted to look at modifying the 2013-14 calendar with an eye to preventing, as much as possible, such a late end next year. She polled parents on a couple of possibilities for squeezing extra days into the middle of the school year and even beginning the year a bit earlier. On Monday, April 8, the Weston School Committee discussed the poll results as well as Maloney's suggestions and reached a tentative decision on some modifications. According to an announcement from Maloney, the changes the School Committee supported include: - Moving the 2013-14 start date to …

School Committee Addresses Special Education Program

The Weston School Committee has issued a statement about the system's special education program.

An apology to members of the Weston community was just one element of a Weston School Committee statement issued last week regarding the system's special education program. "We are very sorry that members of our community have had to endure these frustrations," the statement reads, in a section titled Programmatic Weaknesses. "It is clear that in many cases, the Weston Public Schools should have done better in this area." (Download a PDF of the full statement). According to the statement, members of the School Committee have spent the past several months meeting with parents whose children receive special education services in Weston. Most individuals said they had confidence in the new senior leadership in the program, the statement reads…

Weston School Committee: Thank you for writing a letter of apology. An important first step in righting the many wrongs that have been committed against children with disabilities in Weston is to admit that mistakes have been made. Rick Manley and Rosemary Tomaso spent countless hours meeting with parents and hearing the truth about special education in our town. I appreciate the time they spent …   more ›
