Weston, Wayland Swim Meet Showcases Firsts, Raises Funds for Newtown

The annual rivalry swim meet brought out some athletic prowess and some generous hearts as well.

The annual Weston vs. Wayland swim meet was held on Dec. 21 at the Wayland Community Pool and showcased a number of firsts in this long time rivalry. The two teams are bigger than they have ever been before with almost 200 swimmers and divers on the combined teams. For the first time ever the squads were split and a junior varsity meet was held before the varsity meet. The JV meet gave many swimmers a chance to swim events they had never tried before, particularly in the 500 free and 100 butterfly. The intensity of the rivalry was displayed in the varsity meet with Weston taking the boys competition by a score of 94-87 and Wayland taking the girls meet with a score of 95-86. A number of new pool records were set demonstrating the high …

Weston Swimming and Diving Team Says Goodbye to Seniors

The team graduates 19 seniors this year.

Part of the ebb and flow of a high school team is having a complete turnover of your personnel every four years. But now that the 2011-2012 season has drawn to a close, the Weston Swimming and Diving coaching staff has to face nearly a complete turnover in the personality of the program in just one year. With 19 seniors moving on from their time with The Tide – and especially 13 graduating from the girls’ side alone – the face of the team is in for a dramatic makeover, next winter.  “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying we’re graduating all our great athletes and leaders and don’t have strong underclassmen,” said Coach Claude Valle. “What I am saying is that we’re losing a very, very special group of young men and women. These athletes were …

The boys' team took home its 20th state championship in 40 years.

Editor's Note: The following article was submitted by the Weston Athletic Department.  In an incredible display of teamwork and effort, the Weston High School boys’ swimming and diving team brought home team state championship number 20 last weekend, from Harvard. It was the 20th state title for the program in 40 years.  “I could not be more proud of a group,” said Head Coach Claude Valle, fresh off a celebratory dip in the Blodgett Pool. “Every boy played a role in this victory, including all our younger athletes who came to cheer us on; they’ve done a great job carrying on the winning tradition established here by Folz.” (Valle was referring to his mentor and program founder, Pete Foley.) Entering the meet, the King Phillip Warriors (in …

From start to finish, Weston’s girl relays dominated the competition, as the Weston raced to a third-place overall team finish in a field of more than 30 schools. In the opening medley relay, the team of backstroker Bianca Tocci (26.98), breaststroker Maddie Pierce (30.89), butterflyer Julimar Avila (25.12), and freestyler Victoria Bryson (23.51) stormed their way to a winning time of 1:46.52. Weston Swimming: Boys Undefeated, Girls Set Relay Marks

Both squads close out the dual meet portion of the season tomorrow at home.

Editor's note: Submitted by the Weston Athletic Department. With a pair of victories last week, the Weston boys' swimming and diving team inched closer to their second undefeated season in three years as they upped their record to 12-0 (8-0 in the DCL). At the same time, the GLOWS advanced to 11-1 (5-1 in league competition), and shattered a school record in the process. The big challenge for the boys last week was Westford Academy, who came to town on Thursday with hopes of an upset. The visitors grabbed a quick 1-3 finish in the medley relay and with a pair of 2-3-4, “deep sweep” finishes in the first two individual events, Westford moved out to a 10-point lead after just three events, at 27-17. With several boys not at 100 percent (a 24…

Weston Boys' Swimmers' Win Guarantees DCL Title; Girls Move to 9-1 (PHOTOS)

A full slate of swimming and diving nets total of four DCL wins, and one invitational meet title last week.

A full slate of swimming and diving netted the Weston a total of four DCL wins, and one invitational meet title last week. On Tuesday, both teams hosted Newton South and each came up with a victory. Then on Friday, Lincoln-Sudbury came to town with the Weston girls taking a 99-85 decision, and the boys winning a 96-90 upset that extended a ten-year home unbeaten streak and clinched at least a tie for the 2012 DCL title. The boys then bounced back on Saturday, in Rhode Island, to take the Read/Watmough Invitational Meet. Without question, the highlight of the week was the boys' victory over L-S. “In our meet prep, we felt we had to have a ten-point lead, or more, after the backstroke knowing that L-S would sweep us in the next event and …

After Strong Contest, Weston GLOWS Fall to Wayland Warriors

In tight meet, twelve records were set in the fastest meet in pool history.

Editor's note: submitted by the Weston Athletic Department. Last Friday, the center of attention in the Massachusetts Girls’ High School swimming world was the Foley Natatorium at Weston Middle School as Weston’s GLOWS hosted Wayland in a DCL showdown. The Warriors have won seven of the last eight state championships (Marblehead took the title last season) and Weston gave everything they had in hopes of an upset. In all, twelve different records were set in the fastest meet in pool history. And despite what Head Coach Claude Valle referred to as “the finest team performance in GLOWS’ history,” the hosts came up on the short end of a 97-89 final, in a hotly contested matchup that was much closer than the final score indicated. Leading the …
