Joe Kearns Goodwin, Neighbor

Joe Kearns Goodwin is a native of Concord and Democratic Candidate for State Senate in Massachusetts 3rd Middlesex District, whose dedication to community, commitment to public service and progressive values have been guiding forces in his career and life.

Joe is a decorated U.S. Army veteran who served in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, worked in manufacturing the next generation of clean energy solutions and worked to elect leading Democrats throughout Massachusetts.<br><br>Joe has deep roots in the Third Middlesex District. He was raised in Concord, where he attended public schools and graduated from Concord-Carlisle High School. Joe has previously served as an elected member of the Concord Democratic Town Committee, and has been active in several Democratic campaigns, including serving as campaign manager for state Representative Cory Atkins’s first successful campaign.<br><br>In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on 9/11, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant combat arms officer and joined the 1st Armored Division in Iraq. He spent more than a year leading a platoon of 30 soldiers patrolling the streets of Baghdad, rebuilding the country’s infrastructure and working to contain growing violence. Joe received a Bronze Star for his exemplary performance in combat.<br><br>Upon returning from Iraq, Joe began a job with General Electric Co.’s steam and wind turbine divisions, working as a leader on both the factory floor and on the finance and strategic side to build renewable, clean energy technology.<br><br>In 2008, Joe was recalled to serve in Afghanistan where he spent a year serving as a special advisor to the NATO Director of Strategic Communications. In that role, Joe’s duties included investigating civilian casualties, helping the Army compensate victims and their families, and crafting solutions to avert future tragedies.<br><br>After returning from Afghanistan, Joe enrolled at Suffolk University Law School and then transferred to Harvard Law School. Joe is a graduate of Harvard College and is recently married to Victoria Bonney. His father, Richard, was advisor to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, and his mother, Doris, is a Pulitzer Prize winning author and presidential historian. Joe has two brothers, Michael, a public school teacher at Concord-Carlisle High School and Richard, a software engineer and a filmmaker in New York.
